How to make filipino food – Pinakbet

Many filipino dishes often have lots of meat and veggies.  You can expect healthy Filipino desserts to be full of fruits and even more veggies.  Vegetables are a big part of Filipino dishes.

For example, Pinakbet is a vegetable dish with shrimp paste (bagoong) added as main ingredient. Pinakbet consists of lady fingers, squash,  eggplant,  bitter melon and string beans.  The taste will vary depending on how long you cook it. Squash may become sweeter when it is overcooked.


Pinakbet Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1/4 C pork belly
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 medium size onion, sliced
  • 1 medium size tomato
  • 1 pc medium size bittermelon (optional)
  • 1 medium eggplant
  • 1 C squash
  • 1 C lady fingers
  • 1/2 string beans
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 2 tbsp shrimp paste
  • 1 tsp seasoning
  • 1 tsp salt


1. Pour oil in the pan and saute pork belly for 5  minutes.

2. Add garlic and onion.

3. Add squash and tomatoes. Cook for 5 minutes.

4. Add the other vegetables and shrimp paste. Sprinkle with pepper seasoning and salt. You can add more salt for your desired taste. Cover the pan and cook for 15 minutes.


5. Sprinkle with spring onions.
